Who can ride Barry County Transit?
If you are in Barry County, you can ride!
Do I have to have a special need or reason to qualify for Transit Services?
No. You don’t need a special reason to ride. Need a ride to work, shopping, doctor’s appointments, recreation? Just call and schedule a ride for any purpose!
What if I need transportation at the same time and place daily? Do I have to call and schedule each ride individually?
No problem! We’ll set you up with a subscription and build a route around you. No need to call each time as long as we schedule you in advance.
In what areas of Barry County do you operate? I heard that certain days are reserved for certain areas?
Barry County Transit covers all of Barry County. We are available to all areas every day Monday through Saturday. Outer area residents do not have to schedule a ride for certain days.

What does a ride cost? How do I pay? Can I pay at the bus?
Clients with disabilities and Seniors 60 and over can ride up to 5 miles for only $1.00; More than 5 miles is $1.50. General fare up to 5 miles is $2.00; More than 5 miles is $3.00. Students ride to or from school within the Hastings city limits for $1.00. Student passes are available online at the www.barrycountytransit.com website. All passes may be purchased in advance at the Barry County Transit office by cash or check. Drivers also accept cash at the time of the ride – correct change please!
How much advanced notice is needed to schedule a ride?
We do not accept ‘walk on’ passengers so please call in advance. A couple days’ notice is best but we try to accommodate emergencies.
What destinations can I ride the Transit to? How far?
You can ride Barry County Transit anywhere within our beautiful county. We generally stay in-county but do make arrangements for non-emergency medical transportation in some of the outer areas. Outer area rates may apply. If you are a resident with transportation needs to a location out of the immediate area, give our dispatchers a call.
I know the Transit provides student rides to Hastings Schools within the Hastings city limits. Can I schedule a ride to school for my child if we live outside of the city?
Student rides outside the city limits are considered general fare and are subject to the general fare pay rate and our ability to schedule. We do not get many of these requests due to the coverage of the regular Hastings school bus routes.
Do you have bus stops?
Bus or Trolley stops are only used during special events. We are a ‘Demand Response’ provider. This means we pick you up right where you are and take you where you need to be! There is no need to find secondary transportation to or from a bus stop.
Can I get off the bus and back on again?
If you schedule your ride that way in advance, yes. But we have to charge you for each trip.
Does Barry County Transit offer discounts?
Residents with disabilities and seniors 60 and over ride for half fare. Students transported to and from school and home within the Hastings city limits pay only $1.00 each way. Student passes purchased online are discounted an additional 5%.
I have a caretaker. Can she ride for free?
Yes. One per client. Verification may be required.
Will you transport my preschool child without an adult?
We will transport preschool age children with a request and consent of their parent or legal guardian. The child must be accompanied both to and from the bus by a designated responsible adult.
